Forum: audio Subject: please, do not permanently implement the new audio player!

Hello,

I'm not entirely sure of whom to address this letter, but I hope someone in a position of influence within the Internet Archive will take note of my having written this.

While I do very much appreciate your never-ending work on the Archive, the new audio player - and to a lesser extent the new video player - is not an improvement in any sense. It, quite simply, does not work. I opted in to trying the player for a brief period, until I discovered that it is entirely erratic in its operation in the Netlabels collection. I have posted a short video on YouTube showing the issues I am experiencing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9h9hmb6zKKE

Again, I very much appreciate your work toward improving archive.org, but I must protest that this latest improvement is more of a step backwards.

Please note that I have tested your player in a number of different browsers and at this time they are all replicating the same issue.

Thank you,

Good evening, Mr. Kaplan -

I am running Chromium on elementary OS Jupiter (based upon Ubuntu 10.10).

Thank you for your help and work.

That's not a very typical setup. I'll pass your concerns along but I hope you understand that we can't necessarily implement something that will work with all browsers, all operating systems and on all devices.

Of course, I understand. However, is there any way you might be able to leave the option to revert to the old player in place, for those of us using non-standard systems? There are currently 13,079 users registered with elementaryos.org - that's a pretty good slice of humanity, and it's my guess that each of those 13,079 people will be experiencing issues with the new player.

Thanks for all your work,

If you look at the item, no ogg files have been generated, there are just the original MP3s. So HTML5 playback is not going to work in e.g. Firefox. (It does seem to still work for me but it must be pulling in the flash code somehow.)

It would be nice as an end-user to have a button or the like to request a derive on items like that (maybe passing through a human moderator), I come across them from time to time.
